If one man can be singled out for the major contribution to our modern consciousness of the value of old buildings - and the need for their ongoing care and preservation - it is the great William Morris. This writer, poet, designer, printer, architect and Utopian socialist was born in rural Walthamstow in 1834. He recalls: ‘flat pasture, once marsh and few permanent dwellings’. A sickly, bookish child, his sojourns in Epping Forest helped inspire his love of natural beauty. When on marriage he came to build his own house in Bexley, the lack of authentic items for the home drove him to despair - and then encouraged him to make his own. The ensuing William Morris workshops became one of the cornerstones of the Arts and Crafts Movement. One of the enduring criticisms of the Victorian Age is the contempt of the old, in which buildings were condemned as incorrect and outdated - and in dire need of ‘restoration’ - a euphemism for wholesale ripping out and destruction. Many a noble church was rearranged - and in the process denuded of its wooden pews, galleries, choir stalls and other fittings. Morris was a pioneer voice against such outrages. And a practical one too. SPAB - The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings - which he cofounded in 1877 - continues to work hard to ensure that our built heritage is not only protected from the march of progress but maintained. One notable building was of such history and merit that it was in little danger of destruction. Perhaps the Royal tag helped. Queen Elizabeth’s hunting lodge in Chingford remains in good condition under its recent layer of limewash. For years, however, it had the appearance of the archetypal black and white half-timbered Tudor building - thanks to, you guessed it, a Victorian restoration... |

Keeping your wood floors looking great over Christmas and beyond
Christmas and the New Year can be tricky times for wood floor maintenance. The party season is in full swing and your house is full of guests and well wishers, not to mention pets, over excited children and fragile Christmas decorations! If you've just been restoring parquet floors or sanding floorboards so they look their best at this time of year, here are a few maintenance tips that will help keep your wood flooring looking great long after the decorations have been packed away.
Provide slippers
Offering your guests a pair of slippers might seem a drastic course of action, but the pressure exerted by a stiletto heel on a wooden floor is 32 times greater than that of an elephant. Think of how easy it is to punch a nail into a piece of wood and you'll have an idea of the potential damage that high heels can do. And if the weather's miserable, your guests could be treading mud, debris and grit over your floors that can cause all kinds of scratch and moisture damage. So ask your guests very nicely to slip off their shoes and slip on some slippers.
Scatter mats
Not only is this a practical way to keep your home warm and cosy during the winter months, preventing heat loss through any gaps in the floorboards, but if you don't want to ask your guests to remove their shoes you'll need to protect your floors in a different way. Doormats placed at entrances and exits will get rid of the worst debris from footwear. A good tip for pet owners is to wipe their paws as soon as they enter the house, so leave an old towel by each outside door for that purpose.
Mop up accidents
Wine, orange juice, excitable children - there are plenty of opportunities for spilled liquid during your Christmas party. While wood flooring makes it easy to clean up after an accident, you'll need to tackle the spillage as quickly as possible so damage doesn't occur. Pay attention to smashed ornaments and dropped glasses too - those shards of glass can quickly scrape your floors causing damage that means you'll be floor sanding in the New Year!
Follow these simple tips, however, and your wood floors won't need sanding for many years to come.
